Morris County’s GIS section is laying the groundwork for a multi-year project converting tax maps of willing Morris County municipalities from a paper and CAD format to a GIS based data format. The pilot project is nearing completion. Read about the project.
Envisioned is a project that is expanded throughout Morris County saving municipalities money on the update of their tax maps. This also has benefits to the County of Morris in terms of having more accurate tax parcel data.
This project would be a shared services with municipalities that would result in a GIS base map of all the line work and annotation necessary to comply with New Jersey Department of Treasury, Division of Taxation 2008 Valuation and Mapping Standards.
Printed tax maps are being reviewed and certified by a licensed surveyor, and will ultimately be submitted to the NJ Division of Taxation for adoption. This pilot project represents a monumental shift whereby tax maps will be maintained using GIS software rather than CAD software, and whereby parcel maintenance and tax map maintenance will now be fully integrated into a single maintenance environment.
The resulting business process will allow for more efficient updates to future tax maps, as well as for more accurate parcel data.
